Maundy Thursday 2026
Details
On Maundy Thursday we remember the night our Lord Jesus Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist and gave the new commandment (“mandatum”) to love one another as he has loved us. Following the 2019 Book of Common Prayer, this solemn and beautiful service includes Scripture readings, a homily, the celebration of Holy Communion, and the opportunity for footwashing in imitation of Christ’s humble service to his disciples (John 13).
Footwashing is offered as a voluntary act of prayerful participation, symbolizing repentance, humility, and our shared call to serve one another in love. The service concludes with the stripping of the altar, reminding us of Christ’s abandonment and the beginning of his Passion.
